Problems Associated with the Curriculum of Mathematics at Secondary Level
Abstract
Curriculum is the guide that describes a learner’s learning route and regulates the learning and teaching process. It recognizes critical learning and teaching areas, which describe in broad terms the information, attitudes, behaviours and abilities that all pupils and teachers must attain at a certain educational level. The objectives of this study were to discuss the problems of secondary school students in mathematics curriculum, to review curriculum of mathematics at secondary school (science group) and to measure the strengths and weaknesses of curriculum in its real implementation. A sample size of 180 students from 3 different schools of Dera Ghazi Khan was randomly selected. A questionnaire was developed to collect the data. The percentage formula was used to analyse the collected data. The results of the study were that teacher don’t use AV aids like geometry box, only 5% teachers solve examples before going to the question of the exercise, teachers did not encourage the students for asking questions, most of the students responded that the curriculum matched their mind level and majority of the respondents also responded that the curriculum of book improved their critical thinking skills. The findings of this study will help the teachers and researchers to solve the problems related to the curriculum of mathematics.
